PERIODONTOLOGY TREATMENT
Periodontology
Periodontology is a specialty of dental medicine that prevents, diagnoses and treats diseases of a set of tissues that include the gums, bone and periodontal ligament, responsible for maintaining the stability of the teeth in the jaws. Periodontal diseases are diseases that affect the gums and bone that support the teeth.
The diseases that cause pathological changes in the periodontium are called periodontal diseases, the most common of which are gingivitis and periodontitis. Currently, periodontal or gum diseases are one of the main causes of tooth loss in adults.
There are two major forms of periodontal diseases, Gingivitis and Periodontitis. Their evolution and factors are different. These two pathologies have in common the accumulation of bacterial plaque that is present on the tooth surface. This bacterial plaque is responsible for inducing gum inflammation, which may, or may not, cause destruction of the bone.
Gingivitis
This is a disease which is limited solely to the gum surface (superficial inflammation). This pathology can easily be treated by taking specific care, with the aim of stopping its development, preventing it from becoming more destructive and causing bone loss (Periodontitis).
Symptoms of gingivitis:
– Bleeding and discomfort when chewing and brushing teeth (absent in smokers due to the action of nicotine).
– Red gums
Periodontitis
Periodontitis is characterised by the destruction of the bone supporting the teeth, which can lead to increased tooth movement and eventually tooth loss. The more advanced stages of periodontal diseases are more serious and have symptoms.
Symptoms of the more advanced stages of periodontal disease include: persistent bad taste, mobile teeth, teeth “pulling apart”, changes in the way the teeth fit together, the feeling of teeth “growing out” and the presence of “pus” next to the teeth.
PERIODONTOLOGY
Diagnosis of periodontal diseases
The differentiated periodontology specialty appointment is made up of: a graduated specialist and a team of oral hygienists who are properly trained and oriented towards providing the patient with the most advanced treatment. The diagnosis of periodontal diseases can be made in different ways:
Periodontal Probing
In periodontitis, a pocket (space) is formed between the gums and the tooth, caused by the destruction of the tissues in depth, favouring the growth of bacteria. In other words, the deeper the pocket, the more advanced the periodontitis. At Clínica Dentária d’Avenida, the probing can be done using an electronic probe that accurately assesses the depth of the pockets.
Digital Radiography
To assess the amount of tissue supporting teeth that have already been lost, digital radiography is used to determine the level of bone around the teeth.
Microbiological Diagnosis
In some cases, a microbiological analysis can be performed to find out which specific bacteria are involved in the destruction of the tissues that support the teeth. In this way, antibiotics can be prescribed with greater safety, boosting the results of the treatment.
Genetic Diagnosis
The destruction of periodontal tissues seems to have a genetic basis. There are many patients whose parents and grandparents have also had gum problems. For this reason, in some patients, determining their predisposition to these problems is very important. After the diagnosis and clinical evaluation, the patient is duly informed of his condition as well as of all the treatments that must be carried out. At this point, the Oral Hygienist will explain to the Patient the type of brushing that is most adapted to the pathology, providing all the necessary material and clearing up any doubts that may still exist.
Gingival Plastic Surgery
Related to the dental support region (specifically the gums), plastic surgery is here to complete the aesthetics of the smile. Problems such as excess gum tissue covering the crown of the tooth, or even the lack of this tissue exposing the root, can be solved with gum plastic surgery
